Here I am to Worship

Today’s music update: Here I am to Worship by Plus One http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFoXFzJvJO4&feature=related

Plus One isn’t just a random la la band. They were the reason I developed a love for Christian music. My dad got me their first cd when I was eight. If it wasn’t for that one milestone, that one random cd, who knows what music I would have ended up liking? Sounds like no big deal? Music is 99.9% Aiste. (:

Here’s another website with history behind them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plus_One_(band)

In 2004 Plus One decided to end their band due to lack of ticket and album sales. I never got to meet them but I came really close, literally; roughly 25 ft. (:

You know you live in America when…..

America, what comes to mind when you think of this vast expansive country? I’ve compiled a  humourous list of random things that exsist in this country. I’ve wanted to write this post  for a long time, finally I shall. Sit back, relax, and don’t laugh too hard! (: Here goes…

You know you live in America when:

You are making “blueberry” muffins and you notice in thin white hard to read letters on the mix label ”imitation blueberries”. To be exact these fake blueberries are made out of red and blue colorings and some type of sugar. Great imitation! Not.

You buy bottled water from the store and look at the label and it says: Ingredients: Water. No wait there’s bug juice and  Saturday night’s leftovers in it.

You meet a person in Europe who knows the capital of your state and you don’t even know what the capital of Hungary is.

To be continued……

The Snowman

Snow, a delightful fluffy white substance that is enjoyed by parts of the world all the way up until December 26. Then it turns into an annoying, cold object that we all wish would disappear. A few months ago I remember during my precious free time, I built a snowman. It was about 5 ft. tall, and the snow balls were not perfectly circular. I added  twigs for the arms and rocks for the eyes, nose, mouth, and buttions. To top this snowman off, I made what I call a French painter’s hat. There the snowman stood smiling; tall and proud. Of course things in life usually don’t stay or go exactly the way you want. My ”wonderful” dog Jessi ( a cute innocent looking ten month purebreed German sheperd who loves to bite, jump and destroy the world ) sees me building this snowman and runs at lightining speed towards me. She jumps up and first scratches the snowman in random places and bites off some rocks and the the twigs. The next day my sister thought it would be funny to knock the snowman’s head down.  So now my snowman consisted of two white blanks of nothingness snowballs. It still stands. Weeks pass, the winds blow, snow melts; the snowman still remains. I’m surprised; every now and then I look out my window to see if the snowman was still there, and it was. This snowman reminded me of humanity and how we can relate to it. The snowman had various trials of coming close to being all the way destroyed but wasn’t. How many times in this life have we faced our trials and felt like shrinking down and giving up? Or are we like the snowman, even though we recieve blows and punches we dare to persist on and withstand it all? It’s a simple concept but quite hard to apply to daily life. So will we be brave enough to face this day head on and overcome the challenges of this life ?…..

Speech,Gifts,& Failures

Wow, it’s been forever since I last posted, but finally I have something worth writing about! This past weekend I had my first speech meet of the season (This is my first year in speech) and I have to admit it was quite an awesome experience. I came to some various conclusions: Why is everyone in the room including the judge and your competitors stone cold serious most of the time as you give your  speech? Well, obviously if the judge laughed it would be quite a distraction and I must admit I smirked a couple times myself attempting to hold laughter in (extremely hard to do) as certain people gave their speeches. I also was reminded of a wise lesson that is obvious yet often times forgetable: If at first you don’t succeed at your desirable level at something new you have tried, true character is never giving up and trying evenharder to accomplish what you want. Who knows? The thing that you thought you were terrible at might end up being the best thing you are good at. All it took for me to realize that was a simple speech meet. What will it take you? This brings me to my next point. You’ve heard of these words  and what I’m about to say millions of times : talent, gift, and ability. Each one of us was blessed with certain somethings, some more than others. This question I’m sure has been pondered by many. How do we know we’ve been given a certain gift and if we have what is it? This answer comes easy for some and more challenging for others. Take Mozart for example, he was possibly what you call “gifted”; he could play amazing masterpieces at age four. I also think the things that we like to do the best are usually the things we are “naturally” good at. Or on the other hand if you’re like me you like to do things that you are not necesarily the “best” at. I always find this statement quite ironic, how can anyone like something that they are not the greatest at? This brings me to my next point, people who once failed or did poorly, or not to their desirable level on certain things can excel and become great at those things if you really put in the time and effort. You’re either born a genius or once again if you’re like me, need to work hard to succeed. I’ve read inspiring stories and talked to people who overcame challenges; once they struggled in a certain area, the next thing you know they became successful and very good at what they did on which they once thought they “failed” at or couldn’t do. For example check out these websites about people who thought they couldn’t but did: http://www.briomag.com/briomagazine/reallife/a0007883.html  Think math is tough? Check out this simple yet meaningful example. I’m also reading this book called “Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations by Alex and Brett Harris. It is one of the best books I have ever read and it illistrates a great example of going out of the ordinary phase of life and into the extraordinary you never could have imagined. Check out my book review at: http://olson10.wetpaint.com/page/Aiste%27s+Blog+%231  While you’re at it, feel free to view other student’s blogs on the left hand side, you won’t be disappointed! (: I’ve also realized that technically in my opinion you have never truely “failed” at something in this life that you should just give up on and never try again. As long as you are alive, physically conscious, breathing, have a heart beat , and blood flowing through your veins, you always have time to change and succeed at what you supposably “failed” at. Not your typical “Night”

Recently in my English 10 class, I finished reading non-fiction autobiograpy book called “Night” by Elie Wiesel.  Elie was a Holocaust survivor and the story is mostly sad and depressing, but I have to say the book was well written and quite moving. It was very addicting to read and it made me remember all the things I take forgranted in this beautiful life. Also, all the “little problems” of life seem to fade away after reading “Night”. This book is definitly worth your time to read…. Here’s a link to a song called “Beauty from Pain” that I think described how Elie felt : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGe89Euc6Bk

I remember  listening to this song called “I Believe in Love” by Barlow Girl. I looked up the history behind the words in this particular song, and some unknown man scratched these words on a wall of a concentration camp:

I believe in the sun even when it’s not shining

I believe in love even when I don’t feel it

I believe in God even when he is silent……

Wow, I’m amazed at his strength in the midst of a terrible and almost hopeless situation. He continued to believe and keep hoping regardless of what was going on around him. If only we could all adapt these precious words into our lives when times are great and when times are a struggle…. Here’s a link for the song.

Caution:Extreme Healthnut read at your own risk

I can consider myself a health nut in certain ways. Let’s just say I’ve had good influences from the past which is the reason these foreign chinese yet english words are about to appear on this page. Maybe half of America and other countries  already know these things but let’s just say this is a a mini school lesson for today (:

High Fructose Corn Syrup-Artificial sugar that is chemically made involving 3 enzymes that is cheaper to produce than regular sugar. This ingredient appears usually on the backs of boxes of cereal, bottles of syrup, cups of yougurt, even some crackers and alot of other places too. From my research it’s quite unhealthy for diabetics and people in general because it isn’t natural sugar.

Partially Hydrated Vegetable Oil-Created by heating oil and letting a few hydrogen bubbles pass through it which results in a denser substance in the form like butter.  It’s like a fake butter and is found in a variety of processed foods. Once again it’s cheaper to create than natural butter. Interesting website: http://www.treelight.com/health/nutrition/PartiallyHydrogenatedOils.html

Other oils include soybean cottonseed, coconut, palm and kernel oils.

BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)- Preserves fats in food  especially it’s odor, color and flavor. It is still being researched weither it is entirely safe or not. This can be found in cereals and shortening.

Wow, as I look at this chinese on the back of food packages, what has America come too? What happened to the days when crackers were made out of 4 ingredients instead of 20 plus? From the countries I’ve went to and the food I’ve experienced the food was closer to natural and not full of all those additives. Are these extra food additives  one of the reasons for America’s growing obesity? I don’t entirely know. As the saying goes “If you can’t read it don’t eat it.” (:

Dreams and Foreign Countries

Dreams… What would we do without them?  Each and every person on this earth has their own unique abstract set of them. I think it would be fun to  write a book about all the dreams someone has had throughout their life time. Dreams inspire us , keep us alive in the darkest valleys we go through , challenge and motivate us to  live life to  the fullest. Speaking of dreams here’s an excerpt from my Lithuanian journal….(and you thought your dreams were crazy (:…)  My wildest dream as I sat there beforet the plane took off from Norway to Iceland  is maybe… just maybe  I could have  a christian rock band and tour around the whole world, and in each country I stopped in I would sing a song in that country’s language.  Ya, I was so happy hearted and full of gratitude and apppreciation. I have a love for other countries and the people.  I think it’s truely amazing how God created all the unique languages and how they sound, all the people with unique sotires and lives and all the special cultures. Wow what a truely beautiful world…..
